Practical guides to testing, measurement and inspection equipment
A gas detector must be selected for the specific gas, concentration range and environment involved. A plug-in household alarm, a handheld combustible-gas “sniffer” and an industrial four-gas monitor perform different jobs and are not interchangeable.
This guide explains the principal detector types, the questions to ask before buying and the difference between locating a possible leak and continuously monitoring personal exposure.
Emergency warning: If you suspect a fuel-gas leak or a carbon-monoxide incident, leave the affected area and follow the emergency advice of your gas supplier, fire service or relevant local authority. Do not use a consumer detector as permission to remain in a potentially hazardous atmosphere.

These alarms provide continuous warning when their sensing and alarm criteria are met. They are different from combustible-gas leak detectors and must be installed, tested and replaced according to the manufacturer’s instructions and local requirements.
Often called gas sniffers, these handheld tools help trace combustible gases such as methane or propane where the model is specified for them. Sensitivity controls, probe design and alarm behaviour can make leak location easier, but the instrument’s gas list and limitations should be checked before use.
A single-gas monitor is configured for one target hazard, such as carbon monoxide or hydrogen sulphide. Industrial models may include audible, visual and vibration alarms, exposure calculations, event logging and replaceable or limited-life sensors.
Multi-gas instruments combine separate sensors. A common workplace configuration monitors oxygen, combustible atmosphere and selected toxic gases, but the correct sensor set depends on the hazard assessment. OSHA notes that multi-gas monitors can incorporate sensors for oxygen, combustible atmosphere and toxic gases in one handheld instrument.
Fixed systems monitor designated locations and may connect to ventilation, process shutdowns or building alarms. Sensor placement, commissioning, maintenance and alarm strategy normally require competent system design rather than simple consumer installation.
The sensor technology alone does not establish suitability. Review the target-gas specification, measurement range, interfering substances, operating conditions and required approvals.
A bump test exposes a portable monitor to a known gas to verify sensor and alarm response. Calibration compares and adjusts instrument response against a known traceable concentration according to the manufacturer’s process. They are related but not identical.
For workplace direct-reading monitors, OSHA advises following the manufacturer’s testing and calibration instructions and describes verification of operational capability before daily use as a minimum industry recommendation. Gas must be in date and appropriate for the instrument and its sensor set.
Before relying on any model, verify the current manufacturer documentation, target gases, service life, test procedure and intended environment. Marketplace descriptions are not a substitute for an instrument manual or a workplace hazard assessment.
Not necessarily. Methane, propane and carbon monoxide are different hazards. A product should be treated as capable of detecting only the gases explicitly listed in its current certification and manufacturer documentation.
The terms are used inconsistently. “Gas detector” can describe an alarm, monitor or leak locator, while “gas tester” may refer to an instrument that measures concentration. The specification and intended use are more informative than the product name.
No. Some hazardous gases are odourless, and smell is not a reliable concentration measurement. Use the correct instrument and procedure for the identified hazard.
No consumer alarm should be substituted for the equipment, training and formal procedure required for confined-space work. OSHA requires atmospheric hazards to be evaluated with suitable monitoring and specifies an order of testing for oxygen, combustible gases and toxic gases.
